AFCON 2019 Qualifier
The Afcon 2019 qualifiers gets on the way in Johannesburg, South Africa with Group E fixture between Bafana Bafana of South Africa and Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Nigeria leads the group with nine points followed by South Africa with 8 points.
Libya who plays away in far-away Seychelles occupies the third spot in the group with Seychelles
coming first from the rear.
Nigeria files out with a 3-5-2 formation as oppose the Bafana Bafana’s 4-4-2.
The Super Eagles almost had an early in the fifth minute when Nigeria’s captain Ahmed Musa
drove past the South Africa defense squaring a pass for Kelechi Iheanacho who curled the ball into
the arms of the goalkeeper.
The Eagles’ breakthrough came two minutes later when a clinical pass from Arsenal midfielder Alex
Iwobi found Ahmed Musa who netted the ball.
But it was not to be as it was ruled off-side by the Gambian linesman.
The Nigerian fans in the FNB Stadium roared showing great displeasure on the poor call by the linesman.
Finally, the first goal came in the 9th minute when midfielder Samuel Kalu out-ran a South
African defense and shoots for an own goal.
And a minute later, South Africa were goal-bound but failed to convert the pass.
However, both teams fight on with the home team trying to restore parity. The equalizer came in the
25th minute from an almost solo effort by South Africa forward Lebo Mothiba.
The Eagles are almost 2-1 ahead but Kelechi Iheanacho fumbles in the goalkeeper box failing to
convert the chance.
Both teams retire for the half time break with the score line pegged at 1-1.
Nigeria scores in the 84th minute but its ruled off-side. Henry Onyekuru comes in as a substitute for
Ahmed Musa 3 minutes later.
Finally, here comes the final whistle and the Super Eagles of Nigeria has qualified for next year’s AFCON billed for Cameroun.
