Akwa United have unveiled Brazilian tactician, Rafael Everton as their new head coach.
The Nigeria Professional Football League [NPFL] club secured the services of Everton on a year
deal to guide the side in the 2018/19 season.
The Brazilian during his unveiling promised to win at least a trophy with Akwa United, reports Sportsfora.com
Rafael Everton replaced outgoing Abdu Maikaba who recently joined NPFL champions Plateau United.
He also had a brief stint with Abia Warriors after parting ways with Nnewi-based Ifeanyi Ubah Football Club.
Akwa United finished second in the NPFL last season behind champions Plateau United and was unable to defend the Aiteo Cup.
But the ‘Promise Keepers’ lost in the quarter final to eventual winners of the Aiteo Cup, Enugu Rangers.
“I believe in my work and I believe I can win a trophy for Akwa United,” he said at his unveiling in Uyo on Monday.
“I like picking up new challenges that pushes me to be great.”
The 2018/2019 NPFL season kicks-off on December 1st 2018.
Everton is optimistic he can help the Promise Keepers win major silverware after a trophy-less campaign last term.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Club chairman Mr Paul Bassey told newsmen in Uyo that
Rafael Everton fit into the plans and vision of the club.
Bassey said other coaches were also interviewed for the top job but it was our duty to do what is necessary.
Akwa United needed a coach who wouldn’t be distracted by national team duty, Bassey added.
“We needed a foreign coach with a lot of Nigerian experience;
We also eliminated as earlier said some Nigerian coaches in for obvious reasons before settling for coach Everton,” Bassey said.
