Aiteo Cup: 16 teams jostle for a place in the quarter finals

The Aiteo Cup 2018 edition is ongoing with the battle for places in the quarter final of the prestigious competition (men and women) will begin today in eight different centres across the country.

The games expected in the Aiteo Cup will involve 16 teams in the men’s category and 12 teams in the category.

Group A

In the men’s competition, the Patani Stadium in Gombe will host Group A matches with CAF Confederations Cup semifinalists Enyimba FC, alongside FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s conqueror, that is, J.Atete.

Other teams to that complete Group A are last season’s NPFL Champions Plateau United of Jos and fellow NPFL side Katsina United.

Group B

Another giant-killing team, Supreme Court FC (who knocked out Go-Round FC on penalties in the round of 32) joins NPFL trio Rangers International of Enugu (Five-time winners), El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri and Sunshine Stars of Akure in Group B of the Aiteo Cup.

The matches in this group will take place at the Kano Centre which houses the Sani Abacha Stadium.

The Agege Stadium in Lagos is host to Group C, which has NPFL sides Rivers United, Kano Pillars and Abia Warriors and a currently impressing Kwara United of Illorin, who predictors say are in the group to upset the big names.

Group D

Current champions of the Aiteo Cup, Akwa United are grouped here with Nasarawa United, Wikki Tourists and Kogi United. It is on record that the perceived minnows of the group, Kogi United edge out Niger Tornadoes of Minna in the round of 32.

The matches for Group D will all be played at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, and the home ground of CAF Confederation’s Cup semifinalists Enyimba FC.

Aiteo Cup (Women’s Cup)

In the women’s section of the Aiteo Cup, champions Rivers Angels are up against Bayelsa Queens Feeders and Osun Babes in Group A, with the matches fixed for the Lafia City Stadium.

Group B’s matches for the women at this stage of the Aiteo Cup will be played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. Teams in Group B are last year’s runners-up Ibom Angels, Delta Babes and Confluence Queens of Lokoja.

The Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode will entertain Bayelsa Queens, Nasarawa Amazons and Sunshine Queens in Group C while Group D comprises Delta Queens, FC Robo Queens of Lagos and Edo Queens with the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar as venue

The group phase matches will end on Friday, 28th September. The two –top placed teams in each group will proceed to the quarter finals of the Aiteo Cup, which will hold on Wednesday, 3rd October.
